These two disparate intellectual maladies to me seem correlated. Certainly the center cannot hold but it's not that "the best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity". The "best" over-confidently unleashed "innovations" upon the world which are destructive. The "worst" experience or understand the destruction most acutely and therefore grasp (and sometimes enact?) whichever far-fetched narrative or vision meets their psychological/emotional needs.
Did I mention one of the destructive "innovations" is a place where charlatans provide a smorgasbord of Chimera? Sounds delicious, right? Right?
